Edinburgh Skean

Skeans are the traditional fighting knife of Ireland.  This is a reproduction of a historical piece from 1677.  It came out very close in most details (length is only off by 2mm).   The blade is 1075 carbon steel.  It's 15 1/4" long and almost half an inch thick at the base.  It's very triangular and clearly meant for stabbing.  The handle is carved boxwood with iron ferrules and decorative iron ferrules in the butt.  The scabbard is one piece of 7oz leather that is  stitched on  the back, and finished with a couple of coats of hot beeswax to both protect and stiffen it.  Leather only sheaths for long blades run a risk for being cut through by off-angle insertions, so  the stiffening provided by the beeswax is critical.
